Project Contemporary Artspace is a not-for-profit volunteer run space that has been operating since the 14th of March 1995.
It began as the vision of three recent graduates from the University of Wollongong Fine Arts course, Lisa Havilah, Glen Barkley and Nathan Clarke, who recognised that there was no existing space for local artists to exhibit and perform new work. They made the pitch and got funding to convert an old warehouse building in the upper Keira Street precinct to successfully create what is Project today, effectively a purpose-built gallery/performance space, much-loved and used by local artists.
Project became an Incorporated Association on 27/05/1997, for the period beginning 14/03/1995.
Project’s focus is on providing opportunities and events for emerging, innovative and experimental artists in a variety of mediums, encouraging collaboration and creative thinking between artistic disciplines. The gallery exists so that artists are supported in gaining exposure and valuable professional experience.
Project Gallery is a large open, industrial space that has been refurbished to include state of the art gallery fittings, which reflects the professional approach of the gallery and its members. Project aims to be an accessible exhibition space with a focus modern day creatives developing and supporting a professional arts practice. We are also wheelchair-accessible.
Project has seen many artists, artlovers and friends of the gallery become involved over the years as it has grown in capacity and strength.
As a community resource Project’s value has been recognised by those who utilise and enjoy what this vital organisation provides for the Illawarra community.
Project is open to and encourages, feedback, ideas and contributions from the creative Illawarra Community.
