EMSLA celebrates excellence in still life painting and welcomes the influences of impressionism, abstraction, realism and hyperrealism in all their permutations.

Fifty-five (55) artists from around the country have been shortlisted as finalists for this year’s prestigious Eutick Memorial Still Life Award (EMSLA).

To be announced on Friday, November 8 during a gala launch at Project Contemporary Artspace, Wollongong, the 2019 award drew a record number of entries with finalists hailing from Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, NSW and the ACT.

EMSLA Director Dr Leigh Summers praised the calibre of entries received this year, saying the finalists reflect the breadth of contemporary still life art.

This year’s EMSLA competition will be judged by Jane Watters, the distinguished long-time director of SH Ervin Gallery housed in the historic National Trust Centre on Observatory Hill, The Rocks in Sydney.

Opening Night Performance and CD Launch

The Tender Funerals REALM artists-in-residence project has given families the opportunity to work with our artists and musicians to create a ceremony, an artwork or a personal commemoration of their person. Whether through music and song, stitching or installation, each of these interactions was unique.

As part of REALM, Tender Community Choir was formed under the guidance of renowned local musicians Jodi Phillis and Malika Reese. The choir meet fortnightly and have been singing at events in the Illawarra, recently at Wollongong Memorial Gardens Mother’s Day gathering. The choir will perform and launch their CD of songs on love and remembering.

The Tender Cloths project, coordinated by Michele Elliot, will feature in the exhibition. These ephemeral fabric works have been made with donated funeral flowers from Tender families. After the exhibition, the cloths will go to Tender to be used as part of their mortuary care. In addition, Michele is also exhibiting artworks developed during the time of her Tender residency, on the theme of cloth, memory and loss.

Opening Event - Retrospective

Donald is an artist who is heavily influenced by the juxtaposition of his hometown’s heavy industry and environmentally sensitive beaches. His emotionally satisfying profession of fine art.

His paintings are figurative works, in a contemporary impressionist style. using vibrant colours that are quintessentially Australian, employing quite visible brush strokes to enhance texture, which give his paintings a tactile quality. His works generally feature people enjoying their leisure time surrounded by a mix of man-made structures and the natural beauty of the Australian landscape.
