Our Vision

Project focuses on providing opportunities and events for emerging, innovative and experimental artists in a variety of mediums, encouraging collaboration and creative thinking between artistic disciplines.

The gallery exists so that artists are supported in gaining exposure and valuable professional experience. Project aims to be an accessible exhibition space with a focus on modern day creatives developing and supporting a professional arts practice.

Project has seen many artists, art-lovers and friends of the gallery become involved over the years as it has grown in capacity and strength.

As a community resource Project’s value has been recognised by those who utilise and enjoy what this vital organisation provides for the community.

We aim to live up to our name as a multi-disciplinary arts space by attracting events and workshops from many different art-forms, such as poetry, theatre, music and dance, to complement our exhibitions of contemporary visual arts.

Our History

Project Contemporary Artspace is a not-for-profit arts organisation that has been operating since March 1995.

Project was the vision of three graduates from the University of Wollongong Fine Arts course - Lisa Havilah, Glen Barkley and Nathan Clarke.

They recognised that there was no suitable space for local artists to exhibit and perform their work, so they created Project Contemporary Artspace, which became an Incorporated Association in 1995.

In 2004, the Project team secured funding to convert an old, disused building in Keira Street into an art gallery. The team developed the business case and project plan. Local artist, Moira Kirkwood, created a site plan and environmental impact statement. The application was approved by Wollongong Council in May 2004 and the rest is history. Project Contemporary Artspace was transformed from a derelict building to the thriving, modern, inviting art space you see on the Keira Street site today.

Without the hard work and determination of the founding members and early committee members, Project would not be what it is today.

Since then committees made up entirely of volunteers, have worked energetically to provide exhibition and performance opportunities to Wollongong’s creatives.

Project is a beautiful, unique & professional gallery where artists and visitors are always welcome and made to feel valued.
