Art is a great leveller for people who live with disabilities. it gives direct access to a real world discussion about methods and technique and style. This raises self-esteem, which improves overall health, interpersonal skills, and personal development.
The Outsider Artists involved in the art exhibition have a range of disabilities, which encompass physical, psychological and neurological disabilities. This includes conditions like autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. We also encompass a wide variety of ages from 18yrs to 65yrs with culturally diverse backgrounds, which include Aboriginal, Portuguese, and Nepalese, Greek and Italian artists. A public community exhibition goes a long way to removing stigma around disability creates connections and generating opportunities to build a sense of belonging; promote social inclusion; and empower individuals. Outsider Art Classes provides artist led support that promotes friendship, connections whilst learning new skills. The Outsider artist Exhibition gives artists who live with disability the opportunity to see their artwork hanging in a prominent position and an even greater sense of accomplishment. Especially when their artwork gets sold! This year, the exhibition includes a range of arts, including painting, drawing, ceramics and Jewellery. We hope you will pencil our opening celebration in your diary for Thursday 14th September 2023, 10.00am to 11.45am. Come along and meet over 100 artists Project Contemporary Art Space, 255 Keira Street, Wollongong. Bring your friends and enjoy a free morning tea. Free event. JUST LET GO
|
This exhibition is about how as artists, we use art to let go of things in our lives that don’t serve us anymore. Any negative experience, person or emotion we have, we let go of when we create.
The art of letting go is something that takes practice and a term I have turned into a mantra, a mantra that has turned into a belief. Holding on to negative energy can only cause us harm so by having art as an outlet to channel these experiences we make way for new and exciting ones. It’s about acknowledging that there’s things outside of our control that we cannot change and by accepting this we become more connected to ourselves. The art of letting go also applies to the creation of an artwork, I’ve seen first hand how creatives are quick to criticise of their artwork and this stops them from freely expressing themselves. If they 'Just Let Go' of those feelings and push through that negative energy they would go on to create something worthwhile. Each artist in this exhibition has done just that, they have created something that is an extension of themselves, their experiences and their knowledge. They have created without hesitation or fear of judgement. They have created because they can. They have created because they love it. OPENING NIGHT Friday 18th August 6 - 8 pm Hope to see you. Self-love through nudity is about bearing your vulnerable self, the skin rolls, the stretch marks, scars and/or different body types. It's about understanding your body the way it is and hopefully learning to accept that it goes through changes and to respect and appreciate these changes.
Body neutrality is a shift in perspective, from body hatred, disgust, and dislike, to body appreciation and respect. It is honouring the body as it is and taking a few steps down the body image continuum towards a more neutral zone. Body neutrality is the space where you do not support your body hatred anymore. Reimagine
29th June - 10th July |
A Multi-Media Exhibition
Curated by Tom Williams Launch Event Tuesday 5th July 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm In 2019 a large carpark in central Wollongong was transformed into a skate park by a group of people who wanted to manually reconstruct the space into something that could be shared actively, creatively and inclusively. Redevelopment has now erased the skatepark, but the same spirit of invention and community remains in the people who came together there. Reimagine presents work by a group of artists who were brought together by this place, and who are driven to transform, reinvent and record the world they live in. This exhibition is an elegy for a place that contained rich culture and community; it’s also a document and a continuation of that culture. The exhibition includes photographs, drawings, paintings, 3D works, glasswork, textiles, prints and graff work. Exhibiting artists: Sarah Cameron, Simon De Mayo, Keanan Garrett, Ryan Grant, Seiji Hirajima, Megan Low, Mark Merrikan, Will Morgan, Marlon Roche, Brett Scar, Tom Williams |

SPORULATION
20th April - 1st May Sporulation: the formation of spores, a reproductive body produced by fungi capable of development into a new individual either directly or after fusion with another spore Sporulation explores the so-called psychedelic renaissance underway around the world. This exhibition will drop creative spores to bring greater awareness of psychedelic medicines to the Illawarra community. Psychedelic medicine is arriving in Australia, arguably not before time. With ever-increasing levels of mental health issues exacerbated by pandemic lockdowns and no real advances in effective treatments for nearly 50 years, it’s time for change. Sporulation 2022 is themed around psilocybin, one of the medicines being pursued for clinical use with people suffering from treatment-resistant depression. The active ingredient in “magic mushrooms”, a high enough dose of psilocybin elicits a “mystical experience” which can lead to transformational experiences – including remission from long-standing depression. Artists contemplate the scientific representation of the psilocybin molecule – in the scheme of things a very small molecule – as the starting point for their exploration of how something so small can lead to such a remarkable outcome. Works investigate aspects of this topic, from formal scientific research through to indigenous or personal storytelling, from the clinical therapeutic process through to shamanic healing ritual, from the ethical, legal and political issues around medicalisation of a plant medicine through to the content and consequence of a psilocybin trip. |

The Secret Lives of Maps
21st March - 3rd April ‘Lost,’ says Warwick Keen, artist and Gomeroi man from north-west NSW. Lost refers to the starting point of an artistic journey begun in a small town with Country and identity denied. Influenced by his mother’s doodles he made black and white drawings using marker pen on cardboard. ‘They were a hodge podge of images from all over the world. Putting bits and pieces of world together to create a world of my own.’ Fifty years later, after decades of study, art practice, exhibitions, commissions and teaching, and the conscious development of his own Aboriginality, a mature body of these ‘mind maps’ will be exhibited at Project Contemporary Artspace, Wollongong, 23 March-3 April 2022. The paintings display a strong sense of his early identification with symmetry, geometry and pattern making, an easy use of acrylic paint, and include culturally related images drawn from his indigenous heritage and indigenous art. ‘Working on these mind maps has helped me find my way.’ Other influences on Warwick’s work include Pop Art, south-eastern Australian Aboriginal Art iconography and the Black Activism of 1980’s Australia. The exhibition is called The Secret Lives of Maps and co-exhibitor is Margaret McHugh. Her conceptual work draws from maps of the Shoalhaven where both artists reside. In the new territories and terrains she creates from black and white media with support from eco-dyes, she explores mapping as an instrument of power and control, most evident in the theft of land from First Nations people. All of her initial mark-making draws from a Surrealist repertoire. Each work frames a journey. All works will be shown Wednesday-Sunday from 23 March – 3 April. |
International Women's Day
Exhibtion: 'BREAK THE BIAS' 2nd - 20th March International Women's Day is celebrated annually around the world on the 8th of March to mark a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. Now in its 21st year, the annual International Women's Day Art Exhibition celebrates female artists from the local Illawarra region. Responding to the theme ‘Breaking the Bias’, thirty-two local artists have created a range of artwork that embraces women's equality. The diverse artists come together to interpret the theme in a variety of artwork styles including sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, drawing, digital media, ceramics, limited edition prints, and paintings. The one commonality is their gender and their personal experience as a woman. |

2021 EXHIBITIONS
John Harris: Remote Sensing
9th - 20th June ‘Remote Sensing’ is a multidisciplinary response to the artist’s archive of original 4 x 5 inch negatives and 16mm films produced by NASA during the Gemini era. Many of the images were originally produced as an integral component of rocket manufacture in the early 60’s and offer a compelling window into a pivotal moment of the twentieth century - the lead up to humankind’s landing on the lunar surface. At a time in which new horizons of space travel are again on the agenda, these refigured images offer a reflection on the imbrications of the industrial and elemental in the scientific process and speak ultimately to human frailty and the precious nature of life on earth. This body of work also includes experimental photograms and other ‘rephotography’ from the archives of mid-century human space flight. |
The Keirabald Prize art exhibition is an annual exhibition of portraits by students in years 5, 6 and 7 across a number of inner-city Wollongong schools.
This year's theme is In My World |
Keirabald Exhibition
26th - 30th May Our exhibition emulates the Archibald Prize and normally runs around the same time. Unlike the Archibald, however, the Keirabald has a theme each year; the theme for 2021 is In My World. Students have interpreted this in a number of delightful and interesting ways.
In preparing for the competition, students from Years 5 and 6 at Balgownie, Coniston, Wollongong and Fairy Meadow public schools, along with students in Year 7 from Keira High School, investigated the Archibald Prize, studied portraiture and experimented with media to create their own portrait. Like the Archibald Prize, works were then judged by a panel of people with wide experience in the art world. This process generated much discussion until a winner and highly commended work from each of the years was decided. Where the Archibald has a People’s Choice award, we instead award a Gallery Director’s Prize. This is selected by the director of the gallery in which the works are exhibited. We also have a Packer’s Prize chosen by the SASS Staff of Keira High School. Congratulations to all students who have their work exhibited here and to their teachers who continue to engage students in the joy of making art. |
Joint Exhibition
and Book Launch John Svoronos and Christine Sykes Official opening and book launch: 2pm Saturday 15 May, 2021 |
Exhibition: Just a Lot of STUFF
John Svoronos 12th - 23rd May This exhibition combines paintings and installations. John's installations use "stuff without intentional discrimination, judgement or rhetoric... unconventional objects, material that does not rate highly in our hierarchy of importance". Inadvertently, each has its own appeal, seemingly forming unintended metaphors. Life, death and regeneration are all part of the flux of life. We as ‘’privileged humans” discriminate according to our own personal evolution. The detritus and disposable stuff from this process of discrimination and desire says as much as our so-called conscious choices, a look at the other side of the coin. John uses what many see as detritus; expendable and cheap, but he is "hopeful you can see some poetry amongst it". John's older paintings revolve around the stories of Jonah, the Wodi Wodi trail and the black panther, along with his fascination with poetry. Of a more recent work, John says: "Jonah’s journey is a recent work. For me it was a journey of paint. I had no intent other than to add paint and see where each mark would lead, and hope that at some point it would work as a distinct whole." Art and literature combine in the painting of John's partner, Christine Sykes at the kitchen table, where she wrote her novel and memoir. Book Launch:

Art as Activity
31st March - 11th April Daniel Breda 'Art As Activity' explores the concept of ‘dynamic sensation’ in neo-futurist art through the synchronization of virtual reality and installation art. The exhibition will portray Breda’s love of creating active participation in the gallery space, alongside his painting practice to form juxtapositions between innovative technology and traditional art.
Described by the Italian Futurists in 1909, ‘dynamic sensation’ involved artists representing their ‘whole environment’. This included depictions of machines, nature, humans and the movements of such; presented in unification. In contemporary space, our environment also includes the digitalised spaces of screen culture, digital interfaces and virtual environments. To convey this concept in a neo-futurist manner, utilising installation and virtual reality art, this project creates active participation through the synchronization of the Virtual interface with real-life experience. |

A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION CHANGING THE WORLD ONE CHROMOSOME AT A TIME |
CELEBRATING DOWN SYNDROME:
17/02/21 - 28/02/21 We’re proud to present a very special photographic exhibition from Celebrate T21 in February, celebrating the lives of more than 100 incredible people with Down syndrome across Australia. Featuring beautiful images captured by more than 60 photographers around the country, the photos celebrate the diversity of people with Down syndrome from pregnancy through to childhood and into adulthood. Celebrate T21 is a small business based in the Illawarra, which operates a national community service: supporting and advocating for people with Down syndrome and their families. The exhibition by Celebrate T21 is an opportunity to shine a light on the lives of people with Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, and also to remove outdated stigmas around the condition. Celebrate T21 have produced two beautiful photo books to celebrate the lives and experiences of families who have a member with Down syndrome through wonderful photos and heartfelt stories - an Australian version of the book was published in 2018, and a UK version for British charity Wouldn’t Change a Thing in 2019. “Our hope is to provide all families with a new diagnosis of Down syndrome in Australia with this very special gift pack, which welcomes them into the supportive Celebrate T21 community, and provides comfort when it is most needed” - Stephanie Rodden, founder, Celebrate T21. The exhibition has been made possible through fundraising by the families who feature in the book, and more than 2,000 copies of the book will be distributed for free across Australia by organisations such as Down Syndrome Australia, Heart Kids, T21 Mum Network Australia, 321 Pregnancy Care, 21 Gifts and through doctors and specialists. A Photographic Exhibition of Resilience and Resistance
#voicesforchange The Illawarra Women’s Health Centre, in partnership with the Illawarra Mercury, DVNSW and Waples is holding a photographic exhibition of women who have survived family and domestic violence. Taken by Walkley Award winning photographer Sylvia Liber, the powerful and intimate large scale photos cut through the words and statistics of domestic and family violence, bringing to the viewer both the full force of the mental and emotional trauma of violence and abuse - but importantly it showcases the strength, resilience and power of survival. Two Trees Talking
"I Was Here, I Am Here" Curated by: Terry Cooper Two Trees Talking is a unique community art exhibition raising awareness around mental health and well-being.
It is a professionally-curated, contemporary art show telling the stories of more than 30 local artists. The exhibition is the brainchild of Terry Cooper, an artist with 5 decades experience in making art. A professional surfboard maker, Terry stopped creating art during a decade of debilitating pain and depression. He returned to art as his weapon of choice against the destructive thoughts brought about by physical and emotional pain, and slowly battled his way back to himself, his family and the world Terry thought that if art could have such a profoundly positive effect on his mental health and his ability to function in the world, there surely must be others with a similar experience. And so the Two Trees Talking art exhibition was born Terry’s vision is to create a platform for artistic expression of pain, provide a safe experience of healing and growth for all who exhibit, and start a broader conversation about how art can be used as a weapon against mental distress and illness, and a medicine to keep people healthy. We are proud to feature a diverse range of emerging and established local artists, many of whom are exhibiting for the first time. |
